Honey Bunches of Oats (with Strawberries)

I know what you’re thinking.  “Really?  Cold cereal?  Groundbreaking stuff there…”  Fair point, but after cracking into this box, we realized just how long it had been since we had eaten cold cereal.  We got suckered in to doing a wellness challenge over a year ago, and part of that was cutting out all the processed grains, so we stated eating more eggs and bacon or sausage for breakfast.  And I honestly don’t think we’ve had cereal in the house since then.  And it tasted SO GOOD!  Honey Bunches of oats is a top notch cereal.  I’d probably rank in my top 5, and the addition of the strawberries make it even better.  It’s got that nice combination of sweetness, nuttiness, and crunch that makes for a really satisfying start to your morning.  Needless to say, it also re-awakened Liz’s downright primal hunger for cereal.  The box did not last long.

Oregon Chai Latte

So, to clarify, chai latte has nothing to do with coffee.  As I learned just recently, it’s actually spiced tea.  But even so, all I could think about while drinking it was, “This would be great combined with the powers of coffee!”  Ours is a coffee drinking household.  And woe be the person who gets in between us and our first cup in the morning.  When we were weathering Superstorm Sandy when we lived in Hoboken, NJ we quickly discovered that instant Folgers just did not cut it.  When the local coffee shop managed to get an urn whipped up, it was like a cup full of sunshine.  As long its decent coffee, I’m not too particular about how it’s served.  I’ll drink it black, or with 1/2 a cup of sugar and topped with whipped cream.  Or, in this case, with a healthy dose of chai.  And this offering from Oregon Chai is awesome.  It’s rich and creamy, and has a strong spice flavor that really shines through.  So far, I’ve tried it just mixed with hot water, but I intend to try brewing up with a cup of fresh coffee, so I can get a full dose of caffeine with the rest of the deliciousness. I need something a little higher octane to get me out the door.  I think it would also be awesome blended with some cold brew coffee and ice to make a delicious morning shake.  Will definitely be looking to add this one to our pantry.

Loacker, Rose of Dolomites

Ok, sure, the name of this product makes it sound like one of those cheesy paperback romantic novels with the Fabio lookalike on the cover, but we’ll set that aside right now because they are a delicious chocolate treat, and for that, I will forgive much.  It’s like a solid piece of Nutella with chopped hazelnuts, and you know how much we love Nutella around here.  It’s rich, not too sweet, and the perfect portion size for a little snack.  I say all this despite what happened to them during delivery.  Houston in the summer is hot.  Like sauna in orbital re-entry hot.  As a result, the chocolates got a little melted, and despite being kept a room temperature for a few days, they failed to completely resolidify, so we sort of scraped them out of the wrappers with a spoon.  So they lose a point of presentation, but they still tasted great.  As long as you keep these from melting, you’ll have a very nice chocolate snack on your hands.

Goya Maria Cookies

These are very pleasant, mild, cookies.  Sure, they don’t quite have the richness of the chocolates mentioned above, but sometimes, you’re in the mood for something a little less intense.  It has sort of the comforting effect that you might find in graham crackers.  And boy do they provide a lovely platform for a variety of toppings.  As you can see, they are the perfect vessel for jam or Nutella, or my personal favorite, cookie butter.  In fact, they are ESPECIALLY good with cookie butter.  I think they have somewhat similar flavor profiles, so it’s like adding a little extra crunch to that delightful combo.  And if you’re not quite feeling up to something like that, I think these would make an excellent offering if you are feeling a bit under the weather.  It never hurts to have a versatile cookie sitting in your pantry.
